Mosque joinery cost in Dubai: what the fixed price covers

Mosque joinery in Dubai usually lands between AED 200,000 and AED 450,000 for a mid-size prayer hall, priced element by element from the mihrab and minbar through to shoe racks and ablution cabinetry. The range comes down to material grade, carving complexity, compliance and how the timber is detailed for humidity.

What counts as mosque joinery in a fit-out package

Mosque joinery is every fixed timber, board and composite element inside the prayer hall and the spaces that support it. MEP, stone flooring, glazing and structural work belong to other packages, and keeping them out of the joinery bill of quantities is what makes quotes comparable.

Typical scope for a mosque interior joinery package in the UAE:

  • Mihrab with a carved frame and recessed back panel
  • Minbar, the stepped pulpit, normally in solid hardwood
  • Qibla wall cladding in timber, veneer, GRC or stone
  • Calligraphy mashrabiya screens and room dividers
  • Imam's door and prayer hall entrance doors
  • Wudu and ablution cabinetry, vanity units, mirror surrounds
  • Shoe racks sized for peak Friday capacity, plus bookcases, Quran shelving and acoustic slat panels

Our mosque fit-out and bespoke joinery services cover design, fabrication and installation under one contract, which removes the coordination gap that usually makes a mosque joinery programme slip.

What drives mosque joinery cost in Dubai

Four things move the price: material, the amount of carving or CNC work, fire and acoustic compliance, and how the design handles Dubai humidity.

Material grade

Solid teak or mahogany costs roughly three to four times more than MDF with laminate once wastage, finishing and longer fabrication time are counted. Veneer sits between the two and holds a consistent grain across large qibla panels, which solid timber cannot do reliably.

Carving and CNC calligraphy

A flat CNC cut screen at AED 1,200 to 2,000 per sqm is a different product from hand carved teak at AED 4,000 per sqm and above. Arabic calligraphy has to be redrawn as a cutting file, and every artwork revision restarts that work.

Fire and acoustic requirements

Prayer halls are assembly occupancy. Expect fire retardant treated timber, intumescent seals on doors and finishes meeting class B-s1,d0. Acoustic slat panels with perforated backing add around 20 to 35 percent to the cost of a plain timber wall.

Humidity and climate stability

Indoor humidity in Dubai swings between 40 and 90 percent. Timber should be kiln dried to 8 to 10 percent moisture content, sealed on all faces and back vented. Missing this is the most common reason a minbar opens at the joints within two summers.

Indicative price bands for mosque woodwork in the UAE

Treat these as planning ranges for budgeting, not as a quotation. Specification and site access can move the final figure by 30 percent in either direction.

MaterialTypical useIndicative rate
MDF with laminate or HPLShoe racks, back of house cabinetryAED 350 to 600 per sqm
Oak or walnut veneer on MDFQibla cladding, bookcasesAED 650 to 1,000 per sqm
Solid teak or mahoganyMinbar, mihrab, imam's doorAED 1,400 to 2,500 per sqm
GRC, marble or stoneQibla wall, entrance portalsAED 900 to 1,800 per sqm

Per element, indicative ranges for mihrab and minbar joinery in Dubai:

  • Mihrab: AED 8,000 to 18,000 veneered, AED 25,000 to 65,000 fully carved hardwood
  • Minbar: AED 35,000 to 90,000 fixed timber, AED 120,000 to 250,000 large carved with calligraphy
  • Screens: AED 1,200 to 2,000 per sqm CNC board, AED 1,800 to 3,500 per sqm CNC hardwood, AED 4,000 per sqm and above hand carved
  • Imam's door: AED 4,500 to 12,000
  • Ablution cabinetry: AED 800 to 1,600 per linear metre
  • Shoe racks: AED 450 to 900 per linear metre
  • Bookcases and Quran shelving: AED 700 to 1,400 per linear metre

Worked example for a 350 sqm prayer hall

A 22 metre qibla wall, a fixed minbar, 12 sqm of screen, one imam's door, ablution cabinetry, shoe racks and bookcases at mid-range specification:

  1. Qibla cladding, 66 sqm at AED 700 per sqm: AED 46,200
  2. Veneered mihrab with carved frame: AED 18,000
  3. Fixed hardwood minbar: AED 55,000
  4. CNC screens, 12 sqm at AED 2,000 per sqm: AED 24,000
  5. Imam's door: AED 8,000
  6. Ablution cabinetry, 15 linear metres at AED 1,100: AED 16,500
  7. Shoe racks, 20 linear metres at AED 600: AED 12,000
  8. Bookcases, 10 linear metres at AED 900: AED 9,000

That is AED 188,700 of joinery. Add design, shop drawings, delivery, installation, MEP coordination and five percent contingency and the package lands between AED 230,000 and AED 270,000. Upgrade to solid teak and hand carving and the same hall passes AED 400,000. For a firm number on your own hall, book a free site visit and fixed-price survey.

Approvals and paperwork for a mosque fit out in Dubai

A mosque fit out in Dubai needs sign off from the General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, a DET fit-out permit, Civil Defence approval for assembly occupancy and, where structure changes, Dubai Municipality approval.

Awqaf review covers prayer orientation, mihrab and minbar placement, absence of figurative imagery and finish quality, and two rounds of comments is normal. Civil Defence looks for fire-rated doors, emergency lighting coordination and evidence of fire retardant treatment for timber. Budget AED 8,000 to AED 25,000 in fees and consultant time over three to six weeks, and settle approvals before fabrication starts.

Timeline and payment schedule

For a mid-size prayer hall, allow 14 to 22 weeks from first survey to handover.

  1. Site survey and measurement, 1 week
  2. Design intent drawings and material samples, 2 to 3 weeks
  3. Awqaf, DET and Civil Defence submissions, 3 to 6 weeks
  4. Shop drawings and sample approval, 2 weeks
  5. Workshop fabrication, 6 to 10 weeks
  6. Site installation, 3 to 5 weeks
  7. Snagging and handover, 1 to 2 weeks

Payments are normally staged at 30 percent on order, 30 percent on shop drawing approval, 30 percent on delivery to site and 10 percent on handover, with 5 percent retention held through a 12 month defects liability period. Delays come from late calligraphy artwork approval, marble or GRC lead times, authority resubmittals and restricted hours around prayer times and Ramadan.

How to compare mosque joinery quotes

Compare itemised bills of quantity, never a single lump sum. A lump sum hides the qibla cladding specification and makes substitution easy.

  • BOQ line by line with quantities, units, material and finish
  • Physical samples of veneer, laminate and timber finish, not photographs
  • A shop drawing commitment issued with the quote
  • Fire retardant and acoustic certificates promised before installation
  • A written variation policy with agreed day rates
  • A planned preventive maintenance schedule after handover

Any masjid fit out contractor Dubai committees end up hiring will be the one that puts all six on paper before asking for a deposit. Ask to see completed mosque and commercial joinery projects and visit one in person before you sign.

Frequently asked questions

How much does mosque joinery cost in Dubai?

For a 300 to 400 sqm prayer hall, a full joinery package typically falls between AED 200,000 and AED 450,000 depending on material and carving. A single minbar runs from AED 35,000 to over AED 200,000, and qibla cladding from AED 350 per sqm in laminate to AED 2,500 per sqm in solid hardwood. All figures are indicative until a survey confirms quantities and specification.

Does a mosque fit out in Dubai need Awqaf approval?

Yes. The General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments reviews the design, mihrab and minbar placement and finishes before work starts. The project also needs a DET fit-out permit and Civil Defence approval for assembly occupancy. Allow three to six weeks and coordinate approvals with fabrication.

How long does a mosque joinery package take from survey to handover?

Plan for 14 to 22 weeks on a mid-size prayer hall. Workshop fabrication is 6 to 10 weeks and site installation is 3 to 5 weeks, with approvals and sample sign off running in parallel where possible. Restricted working hours around prayer times can extend installation.

Is solid teak worth the extra cost for a minbar?

Solid teak or mahogany handles daily use, repeated cleaning and humidity better than veneered board, and it can be sanded and refinished instead of replaced. It costs roughly three to four times more upfront. Over a fifteen to twenty year life, solid hardwood usually works out cheaper.

Can you match existing joinery when only part of the prayer hall is refurbished?

Usually yes, if a sample of the existing finish or timber is available for colour matching. Aged solid timber will never match perfectly, so most committees refinish the whole qibla wall rather than patch it. A site visit settles what can and cannot be matched.

Do you offer maintenance after handover?

Yes. A planned preventive maintenance schedule covers hinge and hardware adjustment, timber refinishing, screen cleaning and sealant checks, normally on a six or twelve month cycle. Five percent retention through a 12 month defects liability period is standard on mosque fit-out contracts.
